TENTATIVE AAEN 2011-2012 SCHEDULE

NOT BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY
Potluck at Roswell Area Park
11am - 4pm

In general, we meet every Tuesday at Roswell Area Park
Most people are gathering 11:30-2

In case of inclement weather, we often choose an alternative indoor location. As is the case for most AAEN activities, this decision is made collaboratively and announced on our yahoo email list, so be sure to join so you will know the latest goings on.

All AAEN events are open to any interested active or potential homeschooler.
Here is what we have planned so far, and a list of events from last year. The rest of this year's schedule will be discussed at the potluck and refined as we go along.
Unless otherwise noted, all take place at our regular Parkday time and place.

Sept 13   -   Not Back to School Potluck
Brief business meeting to discuss plans for the year
Sept 20   -   Teen Parkday
For the last few years, the parkday crowd has been young, but in the past we have had groups of teens who enjoyed it every week till they left for college. They've even come back for a parkday reunion. It was great. But that group is grown, and there were not many new high schoolers coming up behind them to carry on, and unfortunately it's no fun if you're the only teen to show up, so parkday for teens fizzled out.
We hate for this new generation to miss out on an experience that was so fun for our older kids, so this year we are inviting all middle and high schoolers to come out to the park just once, all on the same day, and give parkday a try. Pizza and drinks will be provided for teens and tweens.
Parents (and interested youth) will discuss future get-togethers for this age group.
There are several huge fields available, so bring balls, frisbees, etc.

      Halloween Party
      Thanksgiving Feast (Potluck)
      Holiday Potluck
      Valentine Party
      St. Patrick's Day Celebration
      Easter Egg Hunt
      End of Year Potluck

PARKDAY
For those new to AAEN, parkday is the heart and soul of our group, and our own antidote to "Nature Deficit Disorder". Here is an essay from one of our founders on what parkday is all about.
And I just came across this wonderful article from the Sudbury Valley School website that perfectly captures my children's experiences doing sports and field games at AAEN's parkday.

You do not need to be a member of AAEN to participate in parkday. In fact, if you are considering homeschooling, come by after school and get your questions answered while your children play with ours. Treat yourself and your children to parkday this week - we're sure you'll come back for more.
We meet every Tuesday in the Pavilion at the wonderful playground in Roswell Area Park. Lately people have been coming 11:30-2ish, but in years past we have seriously enjoyed staying till dark when the weather was nice. It evolves, and becomes whatever this year's active members make of it. The park has ballfields, a creek, woods and restrooms. Bring your own drinks since the fountain is unreliable. Here are directions.

CLASSES
AAEN is not offering classes at this time.
We are concentrating on being a social group, centered on parkday, with additional activities for various age groups.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
AAEN activities will be cancelled when Fulton County schools are closed due to inclement weather.

GEORGIA RULES and LAWS
Note: Due to Georgia contracting with Lexis/Nexis for its code-on-the-web, bookmarks to specific code sections no longer work. The links below will all take you to the Georgia Lexis portal, and then you will need to navigate the table of contents or copy the section number into the Lexis search box.

Here is the actual text of the Georgia homeschool law, code section 20-2-690. Homeschooling is addressed in subsection (c). Other important sections of the law, relating to truancy, are sections 20-2-690.1 and 20-2-690.2 . Here is the 2005 driver's license law, section 40-5-22 (a.1) that effectively extends compulsory attendance to age 18. And here are the requirements for a teen to get a Georgia driver's license.
http://www.heir.org/ gives the latest information on legal challenges and political aspects of homeschooling in Georgia. They also provide versions of the Declaration of Intent and Attendance forms that are in exact compliance with Georgia homeschool law.
