About

Math and Science at the Paul House

Thank you for your interest in our math and science classes (see below for descriptions and schedule). All of the classes are taught by Angela Paul. Angela is a home schooling mother of four children. The Pauls first decided to home school back in 1984, the year that the current law was passed in Georgia. Their interest in home schooling grew out of the love they had for young people and education. From starting and leading a local home school association to establishing and coaching athletic programs, both Jim and Angela have been very active in the home schooling community in a variety of ways. We are committed to home education for the long haul.

Angela has tutored and taught math and science for over 25 years. She was educated at MIT and Georgia Tech where she obtained a master's degree in chemical engineering. She has taught at both the secondary and collegiate levels and has been instrumental in helping home-schooled students get into college for more than 10 years.

All of the classes will meet in the Paul home in Tucker. We have easy access from I-285, I-85, Hwy 78, Hwy 29 and Jimmy Carter Blvd. Math classes meet once a week for an hour and a half. Science classes meet weekly and have a three-hour lab that meets once a month. Over the years we have obtained very nice laboratory equipment that helps prepare our students for anything they will encounter in college.

Students will be given weekly assignment sheets that contain daily work to be completed. It is important that the students work consistently to stay on track. Quizzes are given in class. At the end of each chapter the student will have a take-home test. This helps us to utilize class time for teaching and questions. A comprehensive exam will be given at the end of each semester.

In addition to the class time, students are free to call or e-mail Angela with questions relating to course work. Students may also come to office hours, which are usually on Friday mornings.

There are many expenses associated with having the classes in our home. Our goal is to have the classes be as affordable as possible. The cost of each class is listed with the course description. To help keep our costs low, we ask that fees be paid by August 1st. Parents may pay by the semester if they add an additional $50 to the cost of the course. Second semester fees are due by December 1st. If monthly payments are needed, we recommend that you begin paying during the spring or summer so that fees will be paid in full by the due dates. The cost of the classes includes lab supplies, but does not include books. We search for the best price on books and pass the savings on to the parents. Typically books cost around $25 for each course. Books are usually available in July, at which time I will have the exact price as well as the complete schedule for the year.

Happy Learning,
Angela Paul

Class Descriptions

Math classes ($475)

Algebra 1 Thursday 12:30 - 2:00
Prerequisite - Pre-Algebra
Continuing studies in the world of algebra. Scientific calculator required.

Geometry Tuesday 12:30 – 2:00
This class will use the Discovering Geometry textbook. Students will learn classical Euclidean geometry, construction, inductive and deductive reasoning, logic and proof. This is an honors class, which will require consistent daily work. Tools needed included protractor, compass, straight edge, ruler and scientific calculator.

Algebra 2 Wednesdays 12:30 – 2:00
Prerequisite - Algebra 1
This course will utilize the Merrill-Glencoe text, which has a focus on application. A graphing calculator is required.

Advanced Math Wednesdays 9:00 – 10:30
Pre-requisite - Algebra 2
Precalculus and trigonometry will be studied in this rigorous course. We will utilize the Advanced Mathematical Concepts Textbook by Merrill. This course is an excellent preparation for calculus and all advanced math topics. A graphing calculator is required.

AP Probability & Statistics Tuesdays 9:00 – 10:30
Prerequisite - Algebra 2
This class will be a great 4th math class for the student not interested in science and engineering. In addition to probability and statistics other topics in discrete math will be covered. This course will be very practical and cover much data analysis. Graphing calculator needed.

AP Calculus AB TBD
Pre-requisite – Precalculus and Trig
The Addison Wesley text is used in this rigorous college prep course. Emphasis is on preparing students for science, math and engineering related studies at the collegiate level. Graphing calculator required.

Science classes ($600)

Chemistry Wednesdays 2:00 – 3:30 Lab Thursday 9 - 12
Co-requisite Algebra 2
My favorite science class! In this class we will make sense of the math behind science and perform experiments to back it up. This is an honors class and has a co-requisite of Algebra 2 or instructor’s approval.

Physics Wednesdays 10:30 – 12: 00 Lab Thursday 9 - 12
Co-requisite Algebra 2
Studies in the mechanics of our physical world. This is an honors class.

Biology Tuesdays 2:00 – 3:30 Lab Thursday 9 - 12
Cellular studies, microscopy, taxonomy, plants, animals and anatomy. This in-depth study of life will be both rigorous and fun. Lab time will be more than just show and tell. Dissections will include everything from the earthworm to the fetal pig.

Physical Science Thursdays 2:00 – 3:30 Lab Thursday 9 – 12
This course is an excellent preparation for chemistry and physics. It is both math intensive and hands on.

Anatomy & Physiology Tuesdays 10:30 – noon ($475)
Prerequisite Biology
This class is an excellent choice for a 4th science class. We will student the anatomy and function of the human body. While there is no separate lab for this class, we will have several organ dissections during the regular class time.
