About Us
We are a not-for-profit cooperative support group of homeschoolers and
other educators interested in exploring alternatives to public/private schools. We are
concerned about the state of our educational system today, and we are committed to
involve ourselves in the education of our children to help insure a future that
matches our hopes and visions. As an organization, we have no religious affiliation
and welcome people of all belief systems, ethnic backgrounds, educational styles and
ages. We seek diversity for the educational experience it is.
We have been active since 1991, making us one of the oldest homeschool
groups in the Atlanta Area. One of our founders wrote this brief history
of AAEN to celebrate our 14th birthday in 2005.
AAEN is staffed
entirely by volunteers. AAEN management structure is non-hierarchal and we
are led by our steering committee, making decisions by consensus. The
steering committee is made up of the active volunteers who provide AAEN
services, and any member is welcome to volunteer their talents and time
and thereby become a steering committee member. All members are welcome to attend
and participate in business meetings - we welcome input from all our members!
We operate as a
cooperative support group and a network to allow members with similar styles and goals
to connect. Through the network, our members share information about available
classes, activities, teachers & tutors, learning aids, curriculum, books, educational
catalogs, etc. We have periodic business meetings, seasonal family potlucks and weekly
play days. We also plan frequent field trips and other activities. Our weekly play
date is on Tuesdays at Roswell Area Park.
Our members come
primarily from the north Metro Atlanta area, although many members live inside the
Perimeter, and some drive all the way
from Stone Mountain and Peachtree City to participate in classes and parkday.
The lifestyles, religious and
philosophical beliefs, ethnic backgrounds, parenting and educational styles of our
members vary considerably and we view that as a strength and an opportunity for
growth.
The
AAEN membership fee is $20 per year and entitles our
members to early notification of upcoming classes, field
trips, Mom's Night Out, and other activities; discounted room rental fees for classes; and
access to a members-only list server. Membership fees cover bank fees, insurance and
administrative costs. There are no salaries in AAEN - members generously volunteer
their time. Click here to join AAEN.
