AAEN Time Capsule
by Kell Berliner
AAEN started when two people, Miranda Paymer and Ann Low, came up
with the idea of a non-religious homeschool group. They, along with
Pam Roe and others, founded the group. "We were perhaps the only
group in Georgia that was non-religious and accepted anyone as a
member," says Miranda Paymer. This allowed those did not want to
sign a statement of faith like Lynn Reed to join a homeschooling
group. Later on, Lynn helped found an AAEN sister group which
quickly became independent. It was in Augusta, Georgia.
Originally, AAEN went to Chastain Park, but a murder changed
that. "The moms were sitting together. The children were up the
hill playing when all of a sudden the moms saw at least ten police
cars zooming towards the children," recalls Carolyn Horne. "We
later found out the children had heard two gunshots, but didn't know
what they were. We found out that a man had been killed, and the
murderer knew the victim." This occured seven to nine years ago
now. The murder was not related to AAEN, but did cause us to move.
Other places the group used to meet before coming to Roswell were
Stone Mountain and Waller Creek Park. When we moved to Roswell, the
classes really took off. Before we had only a handful of classes.
Here we had a bunch! After the potluck building, we moved to the
Roswell Assembly of G-d, where we stayed for a while. The reason we
moved from there was the church wanted a higher fee. So we moved
down the street. This happened a few years ago. This is currently
where we are.
